2056x1536 not an "available display" for 7.9in LCD

Postby orangezero » Sun Jan 25, 2015 4:23 pm

First off, Creation workshop looks really good. I have recently purchased a teclast x89 dual boot (win 8.1 and android 4.4) tablet. It uses "intel HD graphics" as well as the 3735f processor. It appears to have the exact LCD the newest ipad mini uses as it is the same size, resolution and ratio. It is 7.9in, 2056*1536, and 4/3. I can list some more general info if anyone is interested.

In any case, it appears I've duplicated a problem someone else had on the ipad retina display discussion. My display is listed as "DISPLAY 1024*768" in the configure machine tab. Here is what I've done to try to fix:

1. started with CW 36, and just tried CW 54 with no apparent difference.
2. I searched for updated graphics drivers, but it ships with the latest version as far as I can tell
3. I messed around with dual monitor support, and after some fiddling I am able to get dual monitors to show as 2056*1536 and another 28in monitor to show 1920*1200. Seems to me the graphics can support these high resolutions, and allow different ones simultaneously.
4. Then I started messing with resolutions in windows. First is what windows has listed in the display, the second is what CW gives as an option:
2048*1536 ==> 1024*768
2048*1152 ==> 1365*768
1920*1440 ==> 960*720

Perhaps this is an easy answer, but I couldn't find a fix. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's definitely a windows-related issue. As long as you can configure windows to display and use the correct resolution, it should appear correctly in CW. You may have to manually change the resolution to the highest supported.

Thanks for the rapid response.

Just to clarify a bit more, I'm about 99% positive it is displaying 2048*1536 in windows, or any other program. I just set windows to 1024*768 and it is a drastic difference with jagged lines and fuzzy areas like a high resolution screen typically does displaying a lower resolution. It appears that 1024*768 is the lowest resolution it will display (at least according to windows display settings). And, in CW it works exactly the same as 2048*1538, which comes up as "DISPLAY 1048*768" as the only option.

I just tried 1600*1200 in windows and it shows "DISPLAY 1067*800" in the list of available displays.

I found the issue another poster was having:

It was in the retina display thread, around Nov 2014. But no updates as to how or if he got it working with the correct resolution. I'll shoot him a pm. Not exactly the same, but he was using Windows 8.1 as well. I'm actually a little impressed windows could do 2048*1536 on the tablet display while showing 1920*1200 on an external monitor (via micro hdmi). In that mode, I get a 1024*768 option and a 1920*1200 option in CW.

Thanks again.

It was me that was having the trouble. I actually havent gotten back to my 9.6" LCD build so I havent solved the problem, are you saying you have a 7.9" LCD thats 2048x1536? I havent seen that panel. What are you using to connect it to your PC? whats your LCD controller board?

Right now it is being driven by the built-in hardware of the tablet (which runs android and win8). After watching a few teardown videos for an ipad mini retina (current gen) and doing a bit of research as to where the connectors are located, I took a gamble that I would be able to dismantle the screen while keeping it all connected and powered up. It appears an ipad mini could do it just fine, and I was guessing that this no-name company just bought some ipad screens rather than designed their own.

I figured it almost made as much sense to buy a cheap tablet and tear one apart rather than go the route of buying a separate 9.7in and displayport controller board. Just as an example, you can also get a 7in 1280x800 from some chinese websites (including win 8.1) for around $90 now. I bought mine at geekbuying (first time) and they shipped out rather quickly. They are one of the few places with reasonable shipping rates if you upgrade the shipping.

Anyway, bummer to hear you never figured it out. I've read through those two threads several times, but have yet to read someone have success with a 9.7 retina on win8.1. Not sure if there are more than one or two even trying. I know they sell a similar setup at adafruit, so I figured I'd find complaints or a fix if it was a common problem. I was hoping it was a display port problem and I'd avoid it entirely by using the tablet directly.

Tonight I downloaded a command line tool that you use to select resolutions/refresh/etc while opening a program. No change in CW when I "force" the program to run at a set resolution. I tried running it in "compatibility mode" in win7 with no change.

Something just doesn't seem right. Here are a few more windows resolutions with the CW available resolution next to it.

1856x1392 --> 1237x928
1792x1344 --> 1195x896
1680x1050 --> 1344x840
1600x1200 --> 1067x800
1400x1050 --> 1120x840

One odd thing, is that it shows 32bit color but my refresh rate as 61hz? Is this what the 9.7in one does?

I have not attempted a teardown yet. I'm also waiting on resin and other supplies. I should at least try to get my board hooked up and start displaying some slices. Perhaps CW just displays the resolution incorrectly, while the output is actually at 2048x1536. Perhaps I'm jumping the gun a bit. Can you confirm your display (I realize it is a different lcd entirely) showed up as 1024x768 in the display and output a 1024x768 image? I do not think CW lets you have a larger image than the display size...?

Thanks for the reply.

Honestly, It was my first attempt at connecting the LCD. I had just installed windows and CW.. Im sure it was just a driver or setting issue and not an actual panel incompatibility issue.

I think your problem is that you are trying to use a tablet that runs windows 8 with proprietary video controllers, drivers and LCD panel with CW. There is probably some driver magic going on in the tablet to make its hardware run windows 8 that might not be completely compatible with CW..

Yeah, I just spent a while searching for intel driver updates, and it appears that while these things run win 8 the driver support may be nonexistent from Intel (I assumed it would be from teclast for sure). I'm a little paranoid about trying to change the drivers, because who knows what they had to do to get this recognized in windows and I'd hate to get locked out, or screw up the dual boot with android. I read a thread on xda where a guy was able to triple boot to linux, but I don't have the time for that...

I have a lenovo yoga 2 pro (3800xsomething) and win 8 just throws a fit with it. Lots of games I can't even get to load. Seems it would be best to stick with a more common resolution so windows can figure it out. Perhaps my issue with CW is simply because I've only tried a few programs. I should load a few and see if they go bonkers.

That said, the screen is pretty cool. I haven't seen an ipad mini retina for any length of time, but my guess is this touchscreen isn't quite as nice and the screen isn't quite as close to the surface as with the ipad. But it would make a good reading if it wasn't going in as the brains of one of my builds.

As an aside, there is also an 8.9in 2560x1600 screen (339ppi) they are using in tablets but I'm not sure they have a windows version. Seems there are plenty of 9.7in retina tablets now. I wonder if they have the same issue. Someone else may have to gamble on those. :)

Ok, just a bit more information to add. I have a lenovo yoga 2 pro with a 3800x1800 13.3in screen. I've attached a screenshot of the available display section when I have the monitor at the standard resolution. It shows up as 1439x819 in creation workshop.

The only thing that stands out to me is that they both use intel graphics and win 8.1.

Am I doing something wrong here?
