Sorry I've been MIA big time!

I bought a couple of Seadoo's this summer and you all should know there is a no time to waste in Ontario Summers.

I will get back into the whole 3D Printer building scene soon as the weather gets colder.

As for the CD-ROM choice. Wirelessguy, You will need to find yourself a CD rom motor with a stepper motor.

The Device you found will be too complex to control. We rely on stepper motors for positioning and simplicity in this design.

I'll try and check the forum out here and there.

I did manage to find a drive with that screw drive stepper inside and 4 pins. I tested continuity and at least know which pair is which but that's about it. I'm not quite sure what the voltage or mA would be. Anyone out there have a good guess??

The DVD unit I broke down does have other motors I could utilize. The one you are refering to is the main spinning motor I believe. Mine says SSC16L on it but I didn't find any spec sheets on line :(
It does have 12 pins on the wire so I'd have to do some continuity testing to see which windings are actually pairs.

There is a third motor i nthe mix there, which is the one that opens and closes the tray. It too only has a +/- but that's at least branded (Mitubishi R-14 2041) M25E-4 The tray actually has a lot more travel so it's likely a better choice than thee sled Mo was using. The only downside there would be that when it seals completely it does sort of dip and lock in to place. I'd likely have to avoid going all the way up if I used that.

So I do have three options but lots of homework.

What you need is a stepper motor driven CD/DVD assembly. These are fairly common and every savaged DVD drive I've ever opened up has had a stepper.

A stepper motor will have four wires that will connect to your DRV8825.

Regarding the DRV8825 pinout, checkout the wiring diagram at https://www.pololu.com/product/2132/pictures - A1, A2, B1, B2 go to the motor.

I'm looking to start my own build but being that I have some questions that are CDROM related I thought that I'd post them here.

I found an old DVD/RW drive I had sitting around (TDK 420N) and thought it could be a good host for my fist SLA trials. I've sourced some DRV8825 Drivers really cheaply and got a 3000 Lumen DLP Projector for very cheap so I think I'm off to a good start.

The drive sled motor is a bit interesting and I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts or suggestions for me. The motor itself is in the first photo below. It says CL980U D2Z24A. I did try some google searching but didn't see any specs (at least nothing in English). Anyhow, the motor only has two leads +/- and I'll assume it takes 12V DC without issue.

Here's the interesting thing though. If you look at the photos that follow you'll notice that on the gear end of the motor I have some sort of optical sensor that I'm guessing looks for a Zero point in the motors travels. I've tried taking the clearest photos I can in the hopes that someone might know more about electronics that I do (actually I think 90%+ of you likely do).

The white wire lead had 5 pins. Pins 1 & 2 def go to the motor directly but I'm not sure what 3,4,5 do.

Any thoughts for me? I suppose that I could ignore them and manually figure out my stops but being that its there for me to use I thought I'd inquire.

One other question to show how naive I am...
Can anyone explain what the pinout I'd use are for the DRV8825 drivers? What goes to the Uno? What goes to the 12V stepper? do I also need a 12V power supply feed (and should I pick a PS smaller than 500mA/higher??)?

Thanks in advance.
~A
